Seniors Kenan Pala of Francis Parker and Mark Trammell of Santa Fe Christian placed second and eighth in the boys 5-kilometer championship race at the Eastbay Cross Country West Regional at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Pala, a Yale commit, clocked 15:12 and the Wake Forest-bound Trammell ran 15:20 to both advance to the Eastbay National Championships on Dec. 11 at Balboa Park's Morley Field as they return home to compete in San Diego, Calif. Pala and Trammell join Big Bear's Max Sannes and Davis Senior's Zach Ayers among the four California boys qualifiers, becoming the first pair of San Diego male athletes since Matt Carpowich of Torrey Pines and Darren Fahy of La Costa Canyon in 2010 to both advance to nationals in the same year. Pala and Trammell, both representing the Coastal League, went 1-2 in the San Diego Section Division 5 final at Balboa Park's Morley Field and took first and third at the Division 5 state meet at Woodward Park in Fresno.
